Are You Gonna Go My Way Lyrics

I was born long ago
I am the chosen I'm the one
I have come to save the day
And I won't leave until I'm done

So that's why you've got to try
You got to breath and have some fun
Though I'm not paid I play this game
And I won't stop until I'm done

But what I really want to know is
Are You Gonna Go My Way?
And I got to got to know

I don't know why we always cry
This we must leave and get undone
We must engage and rearrange
And turn this planet back to one

So tell me why we got to die
And kill each other one by one
We've got to love and rub-a-dub
We've got to dance and be in love

But what I really want to know is
Are you gonna go my way?
And I got to got to know

Are you gonna go my way?
'Cause baby I got to know
Yeah

  • This is about Jesus Christ, whom Lenny referred to as "The Ultimate Rock Star." It's about how God gives choice to man about where to turn. (thanks, Ramon - Ottawa, Canada)
  • This was not released as a single in the US, but in 1995 a live version was used as the B-side of Kravitz' "Rock And Roll Is Dead."
  • Kravitz played this on Saturday Night Live in 1993. (thanks, Michael - Mountain View, CA)
  • In an interview posted on his website, Kravitz said: "We were just jamming in the studio. You know, I was jamming with Craig Ross, who I wrote the song with. It was one of those songs that happened in 5 minutes. We were jamming. I thought there was something happening. I told Henry to turn the tape machines on, and we played it. And that was it. And then I went and wrote the lyrics on a brown paper bag, I remember at my loft on Broome Street at the time. Went in and sang it the next day. And that was it." (thanks, Martin - Rostock, Germany)

I am you and you are me
    Why's that such a mystery?
If you want it you got to believe
    Who are we?
    We're who we are
Riding on this great big star
We've got to stand up if we're gonna be free yeah

If you want it you got to believe
    Believe in yourself
'Cause it's all just a game
We just want to be loved

The Son of God is in your face
    Offering us eternal grace
If you want it you've got to believe
'Cause being free is just a state of mind

    You Stupid Girl Lyrics

Feels like the walls are closing in on me
I'm suffocating, I can barely breathe
And you've got me right where you want me
This is a side of you I've never seen
You're not the girl that you used to be
And you've got me right where you want me

You always know how to bring me down
    Let's just face it now
    I'm never changing

    You are my world
    My everything
    You Stupid Girl
Gonna be the death of me
    So let me go
    Just let me be
    You stupid girl
Love the way you're killing me
    (You're killing me)
    You stupid girl

You're like an angel but with broken wings
A heart so cold could never show mercy
And you've got me right where you want me

  • A track from Framing Hanley's second album, this song follows a common theme in the band's music: relationships that are detrimental to one or both parties. In our interview with lead singer Kenneth Nixon , he said of this song: "It's about really putting yourself in a situation that's conducive to your health and overall well-being all for the point of making another person happy instead of yourself."

    Which Way You Goin'' Billy?
    Poppy Family

    Which way you goin'' Billy?
    Can I go too?
    Which way you goin'' Billy?
    Can I go with you?

    I really love you, Billy
    And all this time
I thought you loved me, Billy
    And you were mine

    I''m gonna miss you, Billy
    And though I''m trying
    I''m hurting so bad, Billy
    I can''t help crying

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go away

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe.
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go

    Which way you going, Billy?
    Or need I ask?
Cause you don''t want me, Billy
    You''re free at last

    I won''t forget you, Billy
    For all my life
    I''ll always love you, Billy
    I''ll stay your wife

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe

    Which Way You Goin' Billy?
  • The Poppy Family were the Canadian duo of Terry and Susan Jacks, who were husband and wife at the time. Terry Jacks, who four years later would release the ubiquitous "Seasons in the Sun," wrote the song whilst Susan sang lead.

Terry was a big Buddy Holly fan, and started writing the song in his pre-Poppy days with the working title "Which Way You Goin' Buddy?" He had the melody, but couldn't come up with a lyrical theme. A few years later, after he formed The Poppy Family, he hit on the idea. In our interview with Terry Jacks , he explained: "It was in 1969 and I had been reading about all these guys going to Vietnam and leaving their women behind in Seattle, and I knew somebody down there that was doing that. I thought, 'Wow, that must be awful.' These guys go and their wives or girlfriends wouldn't know whether they were coming back. That's quite a deal, going to war over there, and it was such a stupid war. So I said, 'That's what I'm going to write about: this woman that's left behind. Which way you going, Billy? Can I go, too?'"
  • Terry Jacks decided to name the lead character in this song "Billy" after hearing a song "Billy, Billy Went A Walkin'" by one of his favorite acts, a Montreal group called The Beau Marks. Jacks thought the name was a good fit. He told us: "I used the name Billy, because you've got to use a name that isn't going to stick out like a sore thumb. You can't do, 'Which way you goin', Lawrence.' Lots of people are called Billy, and it's a name that doesn't rub you wrong or anything."
  • Romantic couples who make music together rarely stay romantic for long, especially when the producer husband tries to coax a better vocal out of the singer wife. When Susan did her vocal for this song, Terry thought it was perfect... too perfect. The couple, who were married from 1967-1973, argued over whether or not she should redo her vocal, and Terry convinced her to give it another try. "The next day we went in and she did it first take," he said. "She was so tired and she was so worn out, she captured the feel. It fit the song. The other performance was too happy."
  • This was the first song The Poppy Family released outside of Canada. In 1968, they had minor hits in Canada with "Beyond The Clouds" and "What Can The Matter Be." This led to a deal with London Records, which released the song internationally. It went to #1 in Canada and was also the group's biggest hit in both the US and UK.
  • This won the 1970 Juno award (Canada's version of the Grammys) for Best Produced Single.

Are You Leaving With Him Lyrics

I've been watching and talked down to you all night long
    Girl it's so wrong
How we, don't even wanna dance with you
Flipping through his phone like he don't even see
You're too pretty to left alone
Sooner or later somebody's gonna take you home

    Are You Leaving With Him
    Are you leaving with me
I'm looking for my end, and it's all in
While he's just waiting for the night to end
I ain't never seen nothing like you
But I got it in my mind what I wanna do
Are you really leaving with him
    Are you leaving with me

You can sit there letting time pass
Looking at your nails, staring down in your glass
Or you can just look up my way
See me wanting you, written on my face
I ain't gonna tell you what you wanna do
Cause you gonna do what you wanna do

    Are you leaving with him
    Are you leaving with me
I'm looking for my end, and it's all in
While he's just waiting for the night to end
I ain't never seen nothing like you
But I got it in my mind what I wanna do
Are you really leaving with him
    Are you leaving with me

It's the last song of the night
You take a sip and we locked eyes

    Are you leaving with him
    Are you leaving with me
I'm looking for my end, and it's all in
While he's just waiting for the night to end
I ain't never seen nothing like you
But I got it in my mind what I wanna do
Are you really leaving with him
Are you really leaving with him
Or are you leaving with me
Come on girl, won't you go with me

    Are You Leaving With Him
  • This song finds Bryan asking a girl why she's spending her time with a jerk when if she hooked up with him, he would treat her so much better. The track is from the singer's sixth Spring Break EP, Like We Ain't Ever. He said the cuts on each release free him up creatively. "I just started writing music without parameters…but with Spring Break, if we wanna drop a little cuss word in there or something, we don't sweat it, and that frees us up more creatively to where we don't get too bound by what's goin' on when we're in the writing room," said Bryan. "My whole idea is that 10 years down the road, you know, we've done 10 Spring Break albums and two or three of those Spring Break songs went on to become big hits that were kind of quirky songs that were spawned from it, then this whole ride has been a success."

    Countdown Lyrics

    Oh I was seventeen,
When I heard the Countdown start, it started slowly,
And I thought it was my heart but then I realised,
That this time it was for real there was no place to hide,
I had to go out and feel,
But there was time to kill,
And so I, I walked my way around town,
I tried to love the world,
Oh but the world just got me down,
And so I looked for you,
In every street of every town I wanted to see your face,
I want to, I want to see you now.
I want to see you now.
    Oh and so it went,
Oh so it went for several years I couldn't stand it
No, oh it must be getting near now that,
    You just don't know,
Oh no you, you just don't understand how many people have seen you,
In the arms of, of of some other man,
I've got to meet you, and find you,
And take you by the hand, oh my God,
My God, you've got to understand,
    That I was seventeen.
    I didn't, I didn't know a thing at all.
    I've got no reason,
I've got no reason at all, Oh no.
    The time, of my life,
Oh I think you came too soon,
Yeah you came too soon then,
Oh and it could, it could be tonight,
If I ever leave this room,
(I never leave this room no)
Oh I wasted all my time on all those stupid things that only get me down,
    Get down, oh.
    Oh and the sky,
    Is crying out tonight,
For me to leave this town,
So I'm gonna leave this town.
    Goodbye.
    O.K.
    Yeah you can leave me,
Oh you, you can go some other place,
    You can't forget it.
Yeah, you know, you know that's O.K.
'cause, 'cause I own this town,
Yeah, I brought it to its knees,
    Can you hear it crying?
    Can you?
Can you hear it begging to me "Please?"
    I know it's coming,
    So soon now
Oh, oh it's on it's way.
Oh no, oh no, oh I can hear them say,
    They say I can't survive,
They say I, I'll never leave the ground,
They say it's all a lie,
And now, and now it's coming down,
    Oh baby now,
Time, of my life, oh I think you came too soon.
Yeah you came too soon now,
Oh and it could, oh it could be tonight,
If I ever leave this room,
(I never leave this room now)
    Oh oh oh
I wasted all my time on all those stupid things that only get me down.
    Get down, oh
Oh and the sky, is crying out tonight,
For me to leave this town,
So I'm gonna go, gonna be there,
    I'm gonna go.
    Bub-bye.
    It's O.K,
    You don't have to care.
    Really.
    Oh, oh really, I swear,
No, no you owe me nothing,
    You owe nothing to me,
And if I messed it up baby,
Then, that's all up to me.
And if you go, then, then I won't follow, no, no
'cause so many times I've been,
I've been thinking maybe, oh maybe I should
    No, I, I'm gonna stay
I, I'm gonna make my way
Oh, I'm gonna get on through babe
I'm gonna make it all some day
    Oh, time, of my life,
No I think you came too soon,
    You came too soon then.
Oh and it could, it could be tonight,
If I ever leave this room,
(I never, I never leave this room, no)
    Oh oh oh
I wasted all my time on all those stupid things that only get me down
    Get down, oh
And the sky, is crying out tonight,
For me to leave this town.
    So I'll leave this town.
The sky, is crying out tonight,
For me to leave this town,
Yeah I'm gonna leave this town
    Time
    Is crying out tonight
For me to leave this town
    So I'm gonna go yeah
    I'm gonna go
    Yeah
    Bub-bye
    I'm gonna leave this town
You're not gonna have me around
    Oh
The sky and stars and God will never ever laugh
Me and stars and moon are falling down.

    Countdown Song Chart
  • This is the second single recorded by the "classic" and most well-known Pulp lineup. The band spent the 1980s with a constantly shuffling lineup due to university and changes in musical direction, but for the album Seperations onwards the classic lineup was secured as Jarvis Cocker on vocals, Steve Mackey on bass, Russell Senior on guitar, Candida Doyle on keyboards and Nick Banks on drums. The first single off Seperations was "My Legendary Girlfriend," and combined with "Countdown" were the first singles to really get noticed by the mainstream music press and started the gradual climb towards stardom in the mid-1990s.
  • At the end of the single version, a sample plays noting "You've just heard one of the most remarkable applications in modern electronics." This is a recording of now-disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris introducing the Stylophone in 1970 in a commercial.
  • B-Side "Death Goes To The Disco" is a remix of at the time unreleased rarity "Death Goes To Town", which was only released in 2005 on a special CD which came with Sheffield journalist Martin Lilleker's book Beats Working for a Living, before being included on the Seperations re-release shortly after.
  • In a 1994 Record Collector interview, Jarvis Cocker detailed the band's singles and albums up until that current point. Noting "Countdown," he stated that lyrically it was about "waiting for your life to take off, and then realizing maybe the countdown's never going to stop, you'll never reach zero - and in the meantime, the rocket's getting rusty and if it got to zero, it wouldn't take off anyway."

    Bitter Rivals Lyrics

    Hi!

It was the best of times
It was the worst of times
I had to kill the new sheriff in town
She was gonna try to keep me
    You go-go down
    You go-go down
In a dream you will never be down
    Some how
    Some how
Another way to make the picture clearer
    Point a gun
    At the mirror
Heart's so dark, make dirt look clean
    So clean
    So clean
    Don't kick
    Don't scream
    But at the end
    I can only be
    No rhyme
    No reason
    Be not afraid
    Be not afraid
    Be not

    You are my bitter rival
But I need you for survival
    You are my bitter rival
But I need you for survival
    You are my bitter rival
But I need you for survival
    You are my bitter rival
But I need you for survival

It was the best of times
It was the worst of times
I had to kill the new sheriff in town
She was gonna try to keep me
    You go-go down
    You go-go down
In a dream you will never be down
    Some how
    Some how
    Lay a hand on me
    Lay a hand on you
    Lay a hand on me
    Lay a hand
Heart's so dark, make dirt look clean
    So clean
    So clean
    Convicts
    Convicts
    East to West
    The answer is yes
    No rhyme
    No reason
    Be not afraid
    Be not afraid
    Be not

    You are my bitter rival

    Bitter Rivals
  • Guitarist Derek Miller told NME about this song with the subject matter of moving on. "It's celebrating coming out of a situation that I didn't think I would be ever able to come out of," he explained. "I had been in the darkest, nastiest situation. I came to terms with my father's death finally, that didn't happen until February (2013). My mom has been in remission for two years now so she's in a great place. I'm in the best place of my life. I'm not going to boo-hoo about it now, but that shattered me for years. When you're in it, you just can't see out of it. But when I cam out of it, I was like 'Oh my god.'"
  • Vocalist Alexis Krauss told NME about the recording of this dog-barking, finger-snapping two chord noise-pop banger: "I had my dog in the studio, and they were setting up to do guitars, and I was like "OK this will be a good time. I'll take my dog out to go pee and I'll be back up by the time they start tracking' and this was literally five minutes, and in one take, it was just like the scrappiest, gnarliest sound. You know? There was no tweaking, there was no fu--ing around with it. We knew it was good and we just left it."
  • The song's music video ends with the message "Be good to each other." Krauss explained to Stereogum : "We thought it would be great to end something that had an aggressive or violent imagery with something kind of humorous and sweet. You know, I was a teacher before I was in Sleigh Bells so being positive and having that kind of energy has always been a part of Sleigh Bells. We're also constantly using the phrase, 'Work hard. Be nice.' It was the phrase I constantly used as my mantra for my kids when I was teaching."
  • Q magazine asked Derek Miller the meaning of the lyrics "You are my bitter rival, but I need you for survival." He replied: "I'd rather leave that lyric open. It could be anything, it could be a war with yourself, an enemy, a girlfriend or boyfriend – it's about being forced to step your game up. That's definitely a big theme. I've got a lot of demons, and making records is one way to deal with them."

    Two Step Lyrics

I'm gonna wear what I want to cause I want to
    I don't need no man
I'm gonna drink what I want to cause I want to
    Just because I can
I'm gonna spend my money cause it's mine
    Shot of SoCo and lime
    Cause it's girls night out

I'm gonna do my Two Step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

Are you gonna sit there and think or buy me a drink, boy?
    What's your plan?
All my girls with me, you like what you see
Oh baby this is your last chance
You've been watching since the moment we walked in
So while your boys are busy be talkin'

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

    Now slide, slide, two steps
    Slide, slide, two steps
Work it out, work it out
    Grind, grind, grind, switch
    Slide, slide, two steps
    Slide, slide, two steps
Work it out, work it out
    Grind, grind, grind, switch

I'm gonna rock my cowboy hat and pink stilettos
We're gonna stomp and kick until they make us all go home
You wanna see if a little country girl can get down
    Let me show you how

Hey little lady, maybe you and me
Could possibly get together for a shot of Jack D
And take a little spinner by the dance floor
Tell me do you want more
All you gotta do is just say so
I can line dance, baby, I can buck dance
Take you down a dirt road, back of the truck dance
Cause Laura Bell you hell on the heart
Good Lord you're gonna tear this country boy apart

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line
Gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step

I'm gonna do my two step, do my, do my two step, step tonight
I'm doing my two step, watch where you step
    Put you two steps behind
Hard to get but you want me ride that donkey
Straight to the back of the line

    Two Step
  • This was the first single to be released by singer and actress Laura Bell Bundy after signing with Big Machine Records. The song melds country and dance music. She told Billboard magazine: "It was essentially a dance track - a country song written over a dance track, so it has the groove. Then, we wrote the structure of the country song over the acoustic instruments. The point was it's two-step, but not your traditional two-step. So, it's not the kind of two step where you have to wait for someone to ask you to do it. Typically, a girl will sit around and the only way she'll two step is if a guy asks her, if he gets up the nerve. This way, they don't have to feel embarrassed and can just get out there."
  • The country and western two-step, often called the "Texas two-step," is a dance usually performed to country music. Bundy told Billboard that her goal on this song was also to bring the two-step into the 2010s. "I wanted to put a more modern spin it," she said. "There's a lot of 'Teach Me How to Dougie,' 'The Cupid Slide,' or the 'Wobble,' and a lot of dance things going on in the clubs."
  • The song features a cameo from frequent collaborator Colt Ford. Bundy told Billboard that she has nothing but praise for the American country-rap artist. "Colt is awesome," she said. "We became friends, and met out on the road, and exchanged information. I had just completed doing the demo of 'Two Step.' I said I had this song, and I need a rap on it. It really lends itself to having that. So, I sent it to him, and he went into his home studio, did the rap, and sent it back. Then, I asked him to be in the video. He's just awesome."
  • In our interview with Colt Ford, we asked why he didn't do the two-step in this song. Said Ford: "I dance pretty good for a big ol' boy, but I'm not a choreography kind of guy. I like to do my own thing."

    Spike In My Veins Lyrics

We are the ones taking all the pain
    Falling on our faces
    They don’t care anyway
    Anyway, now
You’re the one that makes me feel like I’m alive
You’re the one that pushes me all the time
    All the time, now

    We are hard and grey
Always fate, to do what they say
    Calling me deranged
Feeling power, I must take its place some way

    Never gonna run away
    Seeking out the path
But the pain always gets in the way
    Slowly watch me die
    I’m insane, so dangerous
Don’t you dare get in my way
    Throwing in the towel
    Got me strained, so betrayed
Get the fuck out of my way
Looking at my thoughts, I take my time
Pounding all these spikes in my veins

We are the ones reaching out in vain
    Trying to solve our problems
They won’t go away, go away now
You’re the one that makes me feel like I’m alive
You’re the one that pushes me all the time
    All the time, now

    We are hard and grey
Always fate to do what they say
    Calling me deranged

    Spike In My Veins
  • Jonathan Davis originally wrote and recorded this tune with the Dutch Electronic music trio Noisia for inclusion on J Devil's debut album, but it ended up being reworked as a Korn song. Davis told The Pulse of Radio that Brian "Head" Welch 's return on guitar after an absence of nearly a decade was a good balance to his own continued fascination with electronic music. "We wanted to make a record that everybody was happy with, and Head coming back, I think, was great, 'cause me and him butted heads," he said. "'Cause he really is on the rock side and I was on the electronic side, and it was good having the compromise on both sides. It was just good for the creative process."
  • The David Dinetz directed video finds Korn taking their concerns over celebrity-led news overtaking deeper issues like governmental data surveillance. Davis told Rolling Stone, "We are all so caught up in watching crazy media on the Internet and TV that we are manipulated into ignoring that our privacy has all but disappeared."
  • The reasoning behind the video was an attempt was to highlight the band's theory that the government uses celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and Justin Bieber to take our attention away from what Barack Obama has been doing while in office. For instance, the National Defense Authorization Act was signed by the President on the same day of Miley's 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance, yet the latter got the most media attention.

"I think that our government uses those people to detract from what's really going on," Davis told TMZ . "The thing with the whole Miley Cyrus stuff at the VMAs, when that went down Obama passed a law that made him basically a dictator. He can imprison whoever he wants. He doesn't have to charge them, he can hold them as long as he wants."

    Bitch I'm Madonna Song Chart
  • This spunky girl-power track finds Madonna collaborating with Nicki Minaj and thumbing her nose at naysayers. The Queens rapper previously had two features on Madonna's MDNA set: "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and "I Don't Give A."
  • Madonna told Rolling Stone that it's an equal partnership when she collaborates with Nicki Minaj. "Whenever we work together she always sits with me and listens to the song, and says 'tell me what this song is about to you,'" she explained. "She's very methodical in her thinking. We talk about it, she writes down words that I say describing what the song's about and the sentiment that I'd like her to get out there, and then she goes away and she works on it. She writes it, she comes back. She does a version of it, we talk about it. It's a back and forth until she gets it right. It's a total collaboration."
  • Rebel Heart finds Madonna using the b-word a lot (one of the other tracks is titled "Unapologetic Bitch"). Asked by Billboard magazine about her use of the offensive slang pejorative, Madonna replied: "The word 'bitch' means a lot of different things. Everything is about context. When I first moved to England and heard the word 'c--t,' I was horrified. People were calling each other c--ts! And then I realized that, in that culture, it was different - they slapped each other on the back and said, 'Who's the c--t, right, you're my best mate!'"

"The word 'f--k' doesn't just mean sexual intercourse," she continued. "I mean, 'You're a stupid f--k,' 'Are you going to f--k with me?' 'F--k off!' (Laughs.) Sex has nothing to do with any of those expressions, and the same goes for 'bitch.' If I say to you, 'I'm a badass bitch,' I'm owning myself, I'm saying, 'I'm strong, I'm tough, and don't mess with me.' If I say, 'Why are you being such a bitch to me?,' well, that means something else."
  • The song was produced by Diplo, one of seven tracks they wrote and recorded together for Rebel Heart. Diplo told Mojo magazine: "I hadn't really listened to her recent albums but I knew her classic material. We wrote a lot of things - like seven or eight songs together. She said, 'Give me something crazy,' and that's when we made Bitch I'm Madonna."
  • The song's music video was directed by Madonna's longtime collaborator Jonas Akerlund and styled by his wife B. Å kerlund. The epic clip was filmed on the top floors of the Standard Hotel in Manhattan and finds Madonna dancing her way from room to room.

The Queen of Pop opened her Rolodex to surround herself with famous names for the clip. She passes by other party goers, which includes such familiar faces as producer Diplo, designer Alexander Wang, singer Rita Ora and comedian Chris Rock. There are also a number of pre-recorded clips featuring Kanye West, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj while Madonna's sons, Rocco and David Banda, are also seen dancing.
  • Jonas Å kerlund, who also shot Madonna's "Ghosttown" video told Entertainment Weekly filming the clip was a totally unique experience. "Madonna called me about 'Ghosttown,'" he recalled. "We hadn't worked for a while because of different circumstances so when I heard all the songs [on Rebel Heart], I was very excited about 'Ghosttown.' I connected to it creatively. And, yeah, we enjoyed working together. I was supposed to start something else right after and that got pushed and she asked me to do 'Bitch I'm Madonna.' I saw it being so completely different from 'Ghosttown,' something a little bit less serious, just fun and crazy."

Å kerlund detailed how he managed his crew, which was comprised of 100 people. "It was fun! That's the only way to do it really," he said. "But it was technical. Everybody needed to be on their place and do their job. Everyone had cues and everyone was ready. And when we left the shoot, we thought, 'If the video feels half as good as we feel, then it's a homerun.'"
  • The song was Madonna's first Hot 100 hit since "Give Me All Your Luvin'" peaked at #10 in 2012. However, there was one previous composition prior to the Queen of Pop's cut with "Madonna" in its title that charted. An outfit called The Beatles (you may have heard of them) peaked at #4 with "Lady Madonna" in 1968. In addition Robbie Williams had a Top 20 hit in the UK with the Per Shop Boys-featuring "She's Madonna" in 2006.
  • This features production work from the British electronic musician Sophie, who has worked closely with artists from the London PC Music label. "I think Madonna's manager was like, 'Who is this person?' and I was like, 'Trust me, this is very cool to have him be part of this song,'" Diplo recalled to Time. "PC Music is a really post-modern attempt at pop. It's something the kids are generating because everything is so clean as far dance music [is concerned]."

I love that accent you have when you say hello
You relocated from New York a month ago
That mini van that you drive really gets me going
And if it feels like it's right
    Then it can't be wrong

No one understands the chemistry we have
And it came out of nowhere
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
It's not like we planned this, it's getting out of hand
And now we're gonna go there
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    Walk my way
    Mrs All American
    Say my name
    No need to pretend
    Don't be shy
    Mrs All American
    I'll show you why
    You're not gonna walk away
    Yeah

    Not just a neighbor
Oh hey there I'll ring your bell
    Open your door, pucker up
    And I'll kiss you well
    My lips are sealed
There's nobody that I would tell
Your secret's mine, close your eyes
    And I'll make you melt

No one understands the chemistry we have
And it came out of nowhere
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    Hey loose girl
You're my prize possession ever known
I would rather die than let you go girl
Can't describe this feeling in my soul, oh aah
And I can't help but stare you got that glow

Hey lemme get a little bit closer
I really wanna be Mr. Your love
The feeling that you give me is so good

    You're My Star
This is dedicated to my star
I'm so infatuated, who you are?
My star, my star, my star
    A problem not to far
    Only you, you're my star

I get chills, every time I think about your smile
My heart skips a beat, I'm thinking 'bout it now
Can I be a fool? If I don't keep you around
Cause baby girl you light up my world, ooo

  • Tank told The Boombox he recorded the song his own way rather than concentrating about what's going on in current R&B. He explained: "I wasn't relating it to anything outside of, it would be cool to make a song on this Michael Jackson bass line because it would be kind of classic but a new song."

"When we were finally doing it, adding the horns and all of these things, and what's working out there, we were like, 'This could be it,' he continued. "It's not the trend now. They're not signing R&B artists now but this could very well be the future. For me, it leads to my strengths. I'm a musician. I'm a real singer, a songwriter with depth and imagination. I'm a real producer and I'm happier doing that. This is what I do well. For me, it was gonna be the song either way."

    Emotions Lyrics

    Someone took my Emotions,
    Don't forgive me, I didn't ask
    Someone took my emotions,
I feel good, 'cause I don't feel bad

You say that you gon' take my heart babe
But I don't believe in fairytale
It's the same old thing, not a damn thing changed
    You're playing games, playing games
Now I'm taking names, taking names now
And I don't play no more, baby, this is game over

Broke your heart so you could feel it
Think we're gonna think we're really through
    Me and you
Tears fall down, feels like it's raining
Somewhere walkin' feel the pain in you
    Only you (someone took)

    Someone took my emotions,
    Don't forgive me, I didn't ask
    Someone took my emotions,
I feel good, 'cause I don't feel bad

I've tried to give you all my time babe
But they never meant a thing to you
So don't you call my name, all my info changed
    It's such a shame, what a shame
Now I'm breaking chains, breaking chains oh
And I don't play no more, baby this is game over

Broke your heart so you could feel it
Think we're gonna think we're really through
    Me and you (this is)
Tears fall down, feels like it's raining
Somewhere walkin' feel the pain in you
    Only you (someone took)

    Someone took my emotions,
    Don't forgive me, I didn't ask
    Someone took my emotions,
I feel good, 'cause I don't feel bad

All I ever wanted was your time
    Right now I
    Don't even have the patience
I'm tired of waiting for you
    I just wanna let go
You tryin' to change me mind
    But the answer's still no
    Who are you
    You don't mean nothing
    You ain't worth nothing
    When I tell you something
    You don't learn from it
I got my bags at the door, Passport to go
When I leave, you gon' come running
    You did it yeah
    I got no feelings left
I'm so numb, you're so dumb
    It's over, it's over

    Someone took my emotions
    Someone took my emotions

    Everything, everything I do
    Ah
    Everything, everything I do

    Emotions
  • This piano-driven ballad finds a vulnerable Lopez singing of her anguish over trickling keys:

    Someone took my emotions…
I tried to give you all my love but that never meant a thing to you

The song was co-written by Chris Brown. "Chris fu--ed with it after [hearing] the hook," Lopez said during A.K.A's listening party.
  • This is one of several songs on A.K.A. that are personal to Lopez. "I have a song called 'First Love,' I have a song called 'Emotions,' I have song called 'Let It Be Me' — all very personal," she told Pop Crush . "They're very personal songs in different things about my life and how I feel about love or different moments."

"You know, everything's a moment or an emotion that you have, a day you feel a certain way, and you kind of put that into a song or you relate to it in a way that you know people are gonna understand — like, 'Yeah, I've felt that way,'" Lopez added. "It feels like it's something that I would say. I think this album, of any album, is really owning all of who I am musically and emotionally."

Mama Said Knock You Out Lyrics

    Don't call it a comeback
    I've been here for years
    I'm rocking my peers
    Puttin' suckers in fear
Makin' the tears rain down like a monsoon
Listen to the bass go boom
    Explosions, overpowerin'
    Over the competition I'm towerin'
Wrecking shop when I write these lyrics
That'll make you call the cops
Don't you dare stare, you better move
    Don't ever compare
Me to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced
    Competition's payin' the price

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama Said Knock You Out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

Don't you call this a regular jam
    I'm gonna rock this land
I'm gonna take this itty-bitty world by storm
    And I'm just gettin' warm
    Just like Muhammed Ali
    They called him Cassius
Watch me bash this beat like a skull
That you know I've beef with
Why do you riff with me
    The maniac psycho
And when I pull out my jammy get ready
    Cause I might go Blaw!
    How you like me now?
    The ripper will not allow
You to get with Mr. Swift or Rift,
    Listen to my gears shift
    I'm blasting, I'm blasting
Kinda like shaft, so you can say I'm shafting
Oh, English filled my mind, and I came up with a funky rhyme

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

Shadow boxing when I heard you on the radio, UH
    I just don't know
What made you forget that I was raw
But now I gotta new tour
    I'm going insane
    Startin' the hurricane
    Releasin' pain
    Lettin' you know
    You can't gain or maintain
    Unless you say my name
    Rippin'
    Killin'
    Diggin' and drillin' a hole
    Pass the Old Gold

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

    Shotgun blasts are heard
When I rip and kill at will
The man of the hour, tower of power
    I'll devour
I'm gonna tie you up and let you understand
That I'm not your average man
When I gotta jammy in my hand
    Damn!
    Oh!
Listen to the way I slay
    Your crew
    Damage
    Damage
    Destruction, terror, and mayhem
Pass me a sissy so sucker I'll slay him
    Farmers (what)
    Farmers (what)
    I'm ready (we're ready)
    I think I'm gonna bomb a town
    Get down
    Don't you never, ever
    Pull my lever
    Cause I explode
And my nine is easy to load
    I gotta thank God
'Cause he gave me the strength to rock Hard

    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out
    I'm gonna knock you out
    Mama said knock you out

    Mama Said Knock You Out
  • LL Cool J has said that the title of this song came to him during an instance in which he was having trouble getting direction with his writing. When his grandmother heard about this, she gave him the simple advice to "knock them out," hence the song title. (thanks, Brian - Edmonton, Canada)
  • LL Cool J wrote this song about staying on top of the rap game. It was one of the first rap hits to use lots of artillery imagery, with bombs, shotguns and a 9mm pistol showing up in the rather bellicose lyric.

LL's lyrics are purely metaphorical, but around this time real violence within the hip-hop community was becoming a major problem. With the rise of "gangsta" rap, similar lyrics were often far more literal, depicting real-life events and credible threats.
  • This won the Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
  • LL Cool J performed this on the MTV acoustic showcase Unplugged when he became the first rapper to appear on the show.

    Kiss Kiss Lyrics

    When you look at me
Tell me what do you see
    This is what you get
    It's the way I am
    When I look at you
I want to be, I want to be
    Close to heaven
    With Neanderthal man

    Don't go, I know
    You want to touch me
    Here, there
    And everywhere
    Sparks fly when
    We are together
    You can't deny the
    Facts of life

You don't have to act like a star
Trying moves in the back of your car
Don't you know that we can go far
'cause tonight you're gonna get my X X
Don't play the games that you play
'cause you know that I won't run away
So why ain't ya askin' me to stay
'cause tonight I'm gonna give you my X X

    You could be mine baby
    What's your star sign
    Won't you take a step
    Into the lion's den
    I can hear my conscience
    Callin' me callin' me
    Say I'm gonna be
    A bad girl again
    Why don't you come over
We can't leave this all undone
Got the devil on my shoulder
    There's no place
    For you to run

You don't have to act like a star
Trying moves in the back of your car
Don't you know that we can go far
'Cause tonight you're gonna get my X X
Don't play the games that you play
'Cause you know that I won't run away
So why ain't ya askin' me to stay
'Cause tonight I'm gonna give you my X X

If you forget I'll remind you
If you're paranoid I'm behind you
If you lose your head I'll find you
    Sending you my kiss
    Forget I'll remind you
If you're paranoid I'm behind you
If you lose your head I'll find you
    Kiss Kiss

You don't have to act like a star
Trying moves in the back of your car
Don't you know that we can go far
'Cause tonight you're gonna get my X X
Don't play the games that you play

    American Woman Lyrics

American Woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, you gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind

    Say A, say M, say E
    Say R, say I, C
    Say A, N

American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, you gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come a hangin' around my door
I don't want to see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now woman, I said stay away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come a knockin' around my door
Don't want to see your shadow no more
    Colored lights can hypnotize
    Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, I said get away
American woman, listen what I say-ay-ay-ay

    American woman, said get away
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come a hangin' around my door
Don't want to see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
    Colored lights can hypnotize
    Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be

Go, gotta get away, gotta get away now go, go, go
    I'm gonna leave you woman
    Gonna leave you woman
    Bye-bye bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye
    You're no good for me
    I'm no good for you
Gonna look you right in the eye
Tell you what I'm gonna do
    You know I'm gonna leave
    You know I'm gonna go
    You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go-o, woman
    I'm gonna leave you woman

    American Woman Song Chart
  • One of the most misinterpreted songs ever, this is often heard as a patriotic ode or a tribute to American women. It's usually American listeners who arrive at the jingoistic conclusions, ignoring a very clear lyric: "American Woman, get away from me."

The Guess Who are Canadian, and Burton Cummings (the song's lyricist) insists it has nothing to do with American pride. "What was on my mind was that girls in the States seemed to get older quicker than our girls and that made them, well, dangerous," Cummings told the Toronto Star in 2014. "When I said 'American woman, stay away from me,' I really meant 'Canadian woman, I prefer you.' It was all a happy accident."
  • Some songs take months to write, others come quickly in writing sessions or during studio jams. This one, however, had a much more spontaneous genesis: it was written on stage. Randy Bachman explained the origins in our interview. The band was playing a show at a curling rink in Ontario when he broke a string on his guitar. In those days, that meant stopping the show until he could replace it. His bandmates left the stage, and Bachman put a new string on his '59 Les Paul. The next challenge was getting it in tune (he didn't have a tech or even a tuner in those days), so he went in front of Burton Cummings' electric piano and hit the E and B notes to give him reference. As he tuned his guitar a riff developed, then something magical happened.

"I started to play that riff on stage, and I look at the audience, who are now milling about and talking amongst themselves," Bachman said. "And all their heads snapped back. Suddenly I realize I'm playing a riff I don't want to forget, and I have to keep playing it. So I stand up and I'm playing this riff. I'm alone on stage."

The band's drummer Garry Peterson, who had made his way to the audience, jumped on stage and started playing. Bassist Jim Kale heard the ruckus and joined them, and finally Burton Cummings came up and grabbed the microphone. "Sing something!" Bachman implored him. Burton obliged: the first words out of his mouth were, "American woman, stay away from me."
  • In our interview with Randy Bachman , he called this "an antiwar protest song," explaining that when they came up with it on stage, but the band and the audience had a problem with the Vietnam War. Said Bachman: "We had been touring the States. This was the late '60s, they tried to draft us, send us to Vietnam. We were back in Canada, playing in the safety of Canada where the dance is full of draft dodgers who've all left the States."

The lines where the anti-Vietnam sentiment are most apparent are "I don't want your war machines, I don't want your ghetto scenes."
  • According to Burton Cummings, this song owes its creation to a piece of modern technology: a portable cassette recorder. He says that after his ad-libbed performance of the song, they discovered a kid in the crowd who was bootlegging the concert using the device (this is when bootlegging meant literally strapping the recorder to your leg). Listening back to his tape, they were able to jot down the words to recreate the lyric.
  • Fortunately for The Guess Who, American radio stations either didn't hear this as a protest song or didn't care. With a monster riff and the word "American" in the title, it was embraced and quickly added to playlists. By this time, the band were proven hitmakers, having scored with "These Eyes," "Laughing" and "No Time," so this single was widely anticipated. "Radio just played it automatically without even thinking we were saying antiwar words in there," Bachman told us.
  • This song's American success made The Guess Who stars in that country, and on July 17, 1970 they performed on the White House lawn for President Richard Nixon, whose daughter Tricia was a huge fan and asked her dad to bring them in.

It was a huge hit at the time, but The Guess Who didn't perform "American Woman" that day because they were asked not to "as a matter of taste." That request came from the press liaison for first lady Pat Nixon, who may have been turned off by what she perceived as anti-American sentiment or political overtones
    in the song.

The performance served as a royal reception for Prince Charles and Princess Anne, who were guests at the White House. Looking back on the performance in 2014, Burton Cummings said it was a very stodgy affair, and that he felt the band was brought in to impress the royal guests. "It left a bad taste in my mouth," he told the Winnipeg Free Press. "They wanted a Commonwealth act when Charles and Anne went there. We were the token Commonwealthers."
  • The first time the band performed this in completed form was before 150,000 people at the Seattle Pop Festival in 1969. The crowd loved it even though they had never heard it.
  • Randy Bachman calls the distinctive guitar sound he used on this song "The Herzog." To get the effect, he would overdrive the preamp (setting it to 9 or 10) while the normal volume settings are turned down. The sound does not get any louder, but gradually it grows dirtier and finally ends up creating a cello-like effect.
  • Recorded at RCA Studios in Chicago with producer Jack Richardson, this was released as a double A-side with "No Sugar Tonight" and stayed at #1 in the US for three weeks. The Guess Who were already huge in Canada, but this broke them in the States.
  • In the late-'90s, this was used in a variety of commercials, including one for Tommy Hilfiger and another for Castrol motor oil. Nike also used in an ad featuring women's soccer.
  • Lenny Kravitz covered this in 1999, making #49 US. His version was used in the movie Austin Powers 2, The Spy Who Shagged Me.
  • Kravitz and The Guess Who performed this September 21, 2000 at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto. The Guess Who were given a lifetime achievement award.
  • The album version contains a sultry 1:05 acoustic intro, with Cummings spelling out the title ("I say 'A'... I say 'M'...). Radio stations often skipped past it to get to the riff.
  • Randy Bachman left the group the month after this hit #1 in America because the band's lifestyle did not jibe with his religious beliefs. Because of his departure, they did not tour the US when this was hot, which could have made them a lot of money.
  • The Guess Who reunited and toured in 2000, 30 years after this was a hit.
  • This was featured in the Jim Carrey movie The Cable Guy, where it appears in a Karaoke scene, and American Beauty, where Kevin Spacey rocks out to it while going through a mid-life crisis.
  • Jack Richardson, who produced this song, was also responsible for other big hits like The Guess Who's "These Eyes" and Bob Seger's "Night Moves." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Acts to cover this song include Krokus and Ringo Starr. Perhaps the most bizarre cover is by the Butthole Surfers, who released their version in 1986.
